Moon Phase Magic

The moon affects our world, from the tides to keeping our orbit of the sun stable and our seasons consistent. Moon phases even have a small effect on the emotional state of us humans and our sleep schedules. The moon also has a strong effect on magical practices. So knowing which moon phase is best for the type of magic you’re trying to perform can help improve your witchcraft.

Unless a spell says otherwise, you aren’t required to match the moon phase to the intent for a spell to work — even if you do cast a spell during the wrong phase you’re likely to see some success as intent is the most vital ingredient in any witchcraft. Ensuring the spell is cast during an appropriate moon phase will lead to greater success though.

The new moon is a perfect time for magic involving self reflection or setting personal goals. It’s also an ideal time for divination and meditation. A spell during the new moon may be able to help create wind in your sails, so to speak, guiding you towards a goal.

The entire waxing moon phase is an apt time for magic encouraging growth and abundance, both spiritually and physically. The crescent, quarter and gibbous moon are all optimal times for spells encouraging different types of abundance.

The waxing crescent is best for magic encouraging emotional and spiritual growth, the first quarter is excellent for magic pertaining to material growth and the waxing gibbous is especially effective for strengthening existing spells.

The full moon is best for large spells and ceremonies. Blessings and binding spells are particularly effective during this time and, like the new moon, the full moon is an ideal time for divination.

The full moon is also the time where the supernatural beings in the world are most active so if you want to call upon spirits, fae or any other magical beings in your spells the full moon is the time to do so.

The waning moon is an opportune time for banishing the unwanted. Smaller repelling and cleansing spells work well during the waning gibbous and magic cast with the intention of minimising hurdles is particularly effective during the third quarter moon. The waning crescent is the best time for the most powerful banishing magic — spells involving breaking curses and hexes or cutting unwanted energies out of your life entirely.

The spells I sell in my shop all take moon phases into account and are intended to be carried out during the moon phases during which they’ll be most effective.

There’s a page here on my website that gives the next three dates for the full, quarter, and new moons here in the UK.
