When researching the magical correspondences of numbers for my spellwork most of what I found uses numerology in a similar way to horoscopes - as a way to predict someone’s personality based on such things as their birth date or the letters in their name.
This blog post is one I wish I’d had when I was doing research into number correspondence for magic.
Of course some symbolism is personal. Any number that holds personal significance to you is one you likely already developed your own associations for.
An important thing to keep in mind is that certain combinations of numbers are used as codes by racist and bigoted groups so do beware of that when using numbers in magic, especially when shared publicly.
(You can read more about that at https://globalextremism.org/global-extremist-symbols-database/)
Every number has its own associations but as the numbers become higher, finding information on the associations becomes harder and incorporating very big numbers into spells can be challenging in any case. For these reasons, I’ve only listed associations for the numbers zero to nine here.
Zero can represent nothingness. In that nothingness is endless potential and beginnings.
One is a number that of course represents unity. It’s the source of all numbers and a grounding force. It can also symbolise the universe.
Two can represent partnership and collaboration, it’s a number that’s worth trying to incorporate into any spellwork pertaining to relationships. It’s also representative of duality and opposites. Think yin and yang, light and dark, true or false. Of course these ‘opposites’ are not always as easily categorised as they may first appear.
You need only read my previous blog post on gender essentialism to understand my thoughts on men and women being another such pair, as well as the conflicting claims that two may be either a feminine or masculine number.
Three is a number that you may have noticed shows up again and again in folklore and mythology. No wonder it’s so often seen as the most magical number. It’s associated with creativity and luck - though whether that luck is good or bad is open to interpretation. Three can also represent the land, sea and sky or the physical, mental and spiritual.
Four is grounding. It represents stability and the material. Or it can represent compassion in some belief systems. Four is a commonly used number in our descriptions of the world; we defined four cardinal directions, four classical elements and four seasons.
Five is another highly magical number. It can be used as a representation of the four classical elements with the addition of spirit. It shows up in nature, in the five basic human senses, in the pentagram. It’s sometimes associated with deities of love and so is considered to be directly associated with love. Five is a representation of chaos and adventure, and sometimes conflict as a result of that.
In mathematics, six is the first perfect number (a number that is both the sum and product of its divisors). In magic six can be associated with the home and family.
Seven is associated with spirituality, thought and intuition. Like three, it often appears in folklore. Seven is also commonly considered to be a lucky number.
Eight symbolises renewal and ambition, moving forward. It can also be symbolic of communication from the divine.
Nine is associated with wisdom and growth. Naturally this comes with symbolism relating to drastic change and completion. Nine can also understandably be associated with sadness as the other associations while not inherently negative are very common during times of emotional hardship.
Number associations are used in all the spells I craft for my shop. My love spells, for example, ask that you reflect for five minutes on days leading up to the full moon.
If you find this blog helpful, or think I’ve missed any important associations for any of these numbers, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
